Woman gives birth to twins less than one month after first birth

In Bangladesh, a young woman surprised doctors by giving birth to twins almost a month after the birth of her first child.

Arifa Sultana, 20, a resident of Jessore District, gave birth to a baby in February through a normal hospital delivery, but doctors did not notice that the woman had two wombs.

Twenty-six days after the first birth, Sultana experienced the water rupture again and she went back to the medical center. “She didn’t realize she was still pregnant with twins. She broke the waters again 26 days after the first baby was born and she came running to see us,” Sheila Poddar, the gynecologist who treated Arifa, told AFP.

The young woman underwent an emergency caesarean on March 22 and the two babies, a boy and a girl, were born healthy and her mother had no complications.

“I have never seen a case like this in my more than 30 years of medical career,” said Dilip Roy, head of Jessore’s medical services, who also criticized the doctors who treated Sultana before and during the first birth for not detecting the second pregnancy.

This is not the first case of a double pregnancy, which arises because of a congenital anomaly that some women have when they have two wombs. Those who have a double uterus often have successful pregnancies, but there may be risks of miscarriage, premature delivery, or severe complications during delivery.
