Washington Governor Announces His Presidential Candidacy
Portland (USA), Mar 1 (EFE) – The governor of Washington state, Democrat Jay Inslee, announced on Friday his candidacy for the presidency of the United States in the 2020 elections and stressed that his top priority is the fight against climate change.
Inslee made the announcement through a video entitled ‘Our Moment’ in which he assures that he is the only candidate whose main objective is the fight against global warming, which he considers a top priority for the nation.
We are the first generation aware of the devastation of climate change and the last generation that can change things,’ he says in a video that shows different images of the 68-year-old governor since he began his political career 30 years ago.
In all of them, he transmits the same message of urgency to fight climate change, accompanied by other clips showing the effects of global warming.
This is our moment, our climate, our mission. Together, we can defeat climate change. That’s why I’m running for president,’ he says.
Inslee announced a year ago its intentions to present its candidacy, getting involved in national issues and making clear its opposition to the environmental policy of U.S. President Donald Trump, and its policies of zero tolerance on immigration issues.
We have the opportunity to transform our economy, to run on 100 percent clean energy, which will generate millions of well-paid jobs for all communities across the U.S., and create a fairer future for all,” Inslee says.
Governor of Washington state since 2012, Inslee has advocated raising the minimum wage, increasing taxes on businesses and the most favored, applied carbon emission tariffs, supported clean energy and invested millions of his budget in green projects.
One of his latest bets has been to abolish the death penalty in the state.
Science is clear, we have a short period of time to act, the most important question we face is whether we shrink from this challenge, or face it,’ the Democrat said recently in a statement.
Inslee has pointed out that for now he has no intention of resigning his current job and he has left open the option of seeking re-election for a third term if he fails in his goal of reaching the White House.
Other Democrats who have announced their presidential aspirations include Senators Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, Amy Klobuchar, Elizabeth Warren and Kirsten Gillibrand, and former President Joe Biden is expected to join this large group soon.
