UN calls to strengthen commitment to gender equality
The President of the UN General Assembly, María Fernanda Espinosa, called for strengthening the commitment to gender equality and the affirmation of women’s rights around the world.
In her opening address to the Commission on the Status of Women, she highlighted the possibilities for dialogue and rapprochement that this forum opens.
We are here in the name of millions of women and girls who are daily denied their rights and their dreams, and condemned to poverty and exclusion, said the Ecuadorian diplomat.
The executive director of UN Women, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, pointed out that at the moment, the world has the largest population of girls and women since there are records, but more than 130 million girls do not attend school, while women only have a third of the rights that men enjoy.
