U.S. Threats to Shipowners Prevent Venezuela from Receiving Medicines

U.S. threats and sanctions against shipping companies are preventing Venezuela from getting food and medicines into the country, said Reinaldo Castañeda, president of Bolivariana de Puertos (Bolipuertos).

Washington’s actions affect the commercial exchange of shipping lines with private companies around the world, which generates less income from construction materials and other services, the official said.

In an interview with Venezolana de Televisión, Castañeda declared that these measures seek to suffocate the economy and generate a coup d’état in the country.

He highlighted the support and commercial alliances with countries such as Russia, India and Turkey, and pointed out that the alternative to the blockade is to boost national production.

As part of this strategy, the national government is rehabilitating several ports, including Guamache, Nueva Esparta, where a dock is set up to guarantee the loading and unloading of ferries, informed the president of Bolipuertos.

Likewise, the activation of the Dry Port of Araura in the Portuguese state will allow the exchange of inputs for agriculture and production of fertilizers and seeds, he said.
