U.S. Congresswoman Criticizes U.S. Sanctions on Venezuela

U.S. Congresswoman Ilhan Omar denounces that Washington’s sanctions against Venezuela lead to the ‘devastation’ and ‘destabilization’ of the Caribbean country.

“Many of the policies we have adopted have helped in some way to lead the devastation in Venezuela,” said the deputy in an interview published Wednesday by the local channel Democracy Now, according to Hispantv.

Omar pointed out that “the particular bullying and the use of sanctions to intervene and make a change of regime do not help people in countries like Venezuela, certainly do not help at all and they are not in the interest of the U.S.”

According to the policy, financial sanctions, such as those imposed against the state-owned Petróleras de Venezuela S.A. (PDVSA) “lead to devastations” that are being experienced in Venezuela “and ultimately” lead to everyone having serious problems in that country. “They don’t stabilize people’s lives, and they certainly put us at risk here in the U.S.,” she warned.

“Somehow, we have set the stage to get to where we are today,” lamented the Muslim Democrat from Minnesota of Somali origin.

The congresswoman also questioned Elliot Abrams, a veteran and failed diplomat who was appointed in late January special envoy of President Donald Trump’s administration to Venezuela to oversee Washington’s response to the worsening political crisis in the Bolivarian country.

“People like Elliott Abrams, neoconservatives and warmongers, for so long have pushed policies that we can see, not only in Central America, but in many parts of the world, have brought some kind of devastation,” he said.
