Portugal’s Socialist Party leads vote intention

Lisbon, Oct 2 (Prensa Latina) The Socialist Party (PS) of the Portuguese prime minister, Antonio Costa, leads the voting intention for next Sunday’s legislative elections, but without an absolute majority, a poll revealed today.

The PS would get the backing of 37 percent of voters, five more than in the 2015 elections, which would place it in first place with between 97 and 107 deputies of the 230 that make up the legislative headquarters, according to a survey prepared by the Catholic University for the RTP network and the newspaper Público.

However, it would need a partner in a scenario in which the second place would be for the Social Democratic Party, with 30 percent of the votes.

The Left Bloc would burst in as the third political force with 10 percent, while the Unitary Democratic Coalition would be left with six percent.

Currently, the PS governs alone, but with parliamentary support from these latter formations.

The Socialists focus their program on financial management to reduce debt and end the austerity of previous periods.

Macroeconomic data make Portugal an example in Europe, as over the last four years it grew above average – by 3.5 per cent in 2017 and 2.4 per cent in 2018 – and the unemployment rate fell from 12 per cent to 6.3 per cent, according to official figures.
