China to Test HIV Vaccine in Humans

Beijing, China. – A vaccine against the human immunodeficiency virus, HIV, developed by Chinese scientists reached the second phase of human testing for the first time and it will be tested on volunteers.

The ‘long-lasting’ drug, created by China’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention, will be the first of its kind to survive the second period of clinical trials in people.

The candidate vaccine, called DNA-rTV, relies on HIV DNA replication to stimulate effective immunization against the virus itself, said Shao Yiming, the project’s lead researcher.

This is the first time that an immunization study against the virus gets permission to conduct second phase clinical trials in humans, Shao said, adding that it is designed to attack the most common strains in China and with a stronger and longer-lasting effect.
