Car accidents, deaths and injured decrease in Contramaestre

The number of accidents in Contramaestre, as in all of Cuba, decreases, as well as the number of deaths and injured, compared to the same period in 2018.

Javier Frómeta Santí, traffic officer in the municipality of Contramaestre, in the province of Santiago de Cuba, points out that it is the drivers who commit infractions that lead to the occurrence of accidents.

“So far this year we have had a total of 20 accidents with two dead and 22 injured. Compared to the same period last year, we have decreased the accident rate as well as the character of the injured.

But it is regrettable that the irresponsibility of some becomes the sorrow of many, because even though the number of deaths and injured people has dropped, the goal must be zero deaths from road traffic accidents.

“The main cause today is not paying due attention to driving, not respecting the right of way, speed access, undue overtaking (…) Every driver of a vehicle is obliged to keep all attention focused on his control and direction, so he is forbidden to drive distracted, use telephones while driving, carry people on top, drive with one hand, among other violations.

On that basis, if the driver complies with these instructions, there would be fewer facts that we would have to regret,” said the traffic police officer.

Across the country, accidents happen in the following way:
In 2018, the country registered 10,070 accidents, 683 deaths and 7,730 injured. Compared to 2017, it means 1,117 fewer accidents, 67 fewer deaths and 269 fewer injured.

As of May there is a discrete decrease in these three indicators. The country registered 4,134 accidents, 269 deaths and 3,063 injured, which means 22 fewer accidents, 28 fewer deaths and 55 fewer injured. The main causes persist and this year there is an increase in driving under the effects of alcohol and not respecting the right of way.

Certainly, we can all positively influence the reduction of accidents, even while we are passengers in any vehicle whose driver tries to violate the rules and traffic laws, although we do not technically know the regulations, but we do know when we are in the presence of infractions. Let’s strive for life.
