Donating blood, a gesture of altruism

Donating blood is undoubtedly a sign of altruism. In Cuba it is a reality that all the plasma needed both for the manufacture of medications and for saving lives comes from voluntary blood donations.

This is a program in which several sectors participate led by the Family Physician and Nurse, along with the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDR).

One blood donor states: “For a Cuban it is a high honor to donate hid/her blood. It is the most humane, most altruistic task that the Revolution accomplishes, and that we Cubans show for it. For donations to Cuban patients and patients from other countries such as Chile, and other countries that have needed us, there is the collaboration of the Cuban people in this beautiful task. I am already accumulating around 131 donations.

In Contramaestre, a municipality in the eastern part of the island, hundreds of men and women extend their arms to donate blood, contributing each month to the fulfillment of the donation plan, which amounts to 400.

Each donation can save up to three human lives, as well as making it possible to ensure medical care and minimize the waiting time for a transfusion.
