Contramaestre Homage to Voluntary Blood Donors

Contramaestrte.- Paying homage to local men and women who extend their arms in an altruistic gesture was the essence of the ceremony carried out here on the occasion of the Day of the Voluntary Blood Donor.

Since 1962, in times of great danger for Cuba, such as the Missile Crisis, blood donations became one of the most important tasks for the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDR) and the Ministry of Public Health.

Since then, hundreds of members of the CDR (called cederistas) in exemplary and selfless attitude have donated their blood. This way they contribute to save thousands of lives both in Cuba and abroad. In addition, these donors guarantee the raw material for the multiple uses it has in modern medicine.

In the act of homage to the voluntary donors of blood in Contramaestre, incentives were given to young people who have joined the humanitarian task. In addition, organizations, CDR zones, health areas and districts that develop a meritorious work in this task were acknowledged.
