Frank’s Burial: A Revolutionary Demonstration

On July 31, 1958, Santiago de Cuba became a revolutionary demonstration, threatening the forces of the tyranny of Fulgencio Batista in the face of the assassination of Frank País García and Raúl Pujols the day before, due to the betrayal of one of their former classmates.

Several descriptions, among them Vilma Espín’s, narrate the compact crowd of people along twenty blocks, before whose indignation, the repressive forces decided to withdraw and not intervene.

This was an open anti-government demonstration by the people of Santiago de Cuba, which constituted concrete evidence of how much they hated and detested that ignominious tyranny; of how much they supported the fighters for the definitive liberation of the nation.

Santiago de Cuba was joined by cities and towns along the Island, until reaching Havana, where popular demonstrations also took place against the horrendous murders.

Today, Frank lives in the heart of every worthy Cuban, of every Cuban who longs for the continuity of being free and sovereign, of being the ones who choose the path to follow.

If Frank were alive today, he would rise again, but this time against the American blockade, the Helms-Burton Act, against the vile unilateral sanctions applied by the United States government against the peoples who defend freedom and decorum. Today he would fight against everything that hinders sustainable development and his people’ standard of living.
