Tornado caused devastating damage in Havana

A total of 1,238 houses were affected by the tornado that shook this capital, Juan Montalvo, vice-president of the Council of Public Administration in Havana, said the day before.

According to Montalvo, this figure includes partial and total landslides, as well as effects on sectors of the national economy.

The official explained that the Ministry of Public Health has seven institutions affected, while the education sector reports 46 schools with varying degrees of damage.

He also added that there are more than 110 contaminated cisterns in the municipalities of Plaza, Centro Habana and Habana Vieja, due to coastal flooding.

He also noted that the power lines had suffered serious damage in almost all the capital, resulting in the absence of electricity for 220 people.

A more exact evaluation of the damage to the houses will be carried out later, Montalvo said.

The number of people killed as a result of the strong tornado that hit this capital rose to four, while the number of injured reached 195.

The most damaged municipalities were Regla, Guanabacoa, Diez de Octubre and San Miguel del Padrón, according to official sources.

The director general of the Meteorology Institute, Celso Pazos, explained that the tornado was classified as devastating damage, according to the improved Fujita Scale.

The tornadoes are classified according to the improved Fujita Scale, which evaluates their magnitude based on the damage caused, Pazos said.
