The “uniformed kids” who will take care of our ballot boxes

More than 200,000 Cuban primary or secondary school children will guard the ballot boxes on Sunday, February 24, the day on which Cuban citizens with the right to vote will participate in the constitutional referendum. This is an organized and prepared force that the country counts on to ensure with its enthusiasm, joy, discipline and sense of duty such an important democratic act.

With this exercise our childhood and adolescence, dressed in their impeccable school uniforms, will also give a Yes to the Magna Carta in the more than 25,000 electoral colleges that will operate in the country on election day; and they also demonstrate one of the sui generis characteristics of Cuban democracy and the electoral system.

Regarding the referendum, it is also news that, for the purpose of familiarizing the population with the new Law of Laws and to be prepared to participate in an active and committed way in the voting, the Cuban Postal Business Group maintains the sale of the tabloid with the new Constitution of the Republic of Cuba, through the network of units, stands and selling points in the national territory.

To date about two million copies of the document have been sold, said Eldis Vargas Camejo, vice-president of the Cuban Postal Business Group, at a press conference on Wednesday.

With the price of one CUP (“National Cuban peso”), the tabloid has reached even the most intricate areas of our geography. This shows the interest and spontaneity with which the population has gone to the points to purchase it. This makes it the material with the highest circulation and demand, and the fastest sale of Cuban Post in recent years, she said.

The figure of 3,100,000 copies planned for sale before the coming February 24, almost triples that of the Draft Constitution -1,200,000 copies, with an availability of approximately 27 tabloids per 100 inhabitants. (Monica Lezcano Lavandera)
