The International Jazz Festival Plaza 2019 opens today
The 34th edition of the International Jazz Festival Plaza 2019 begins today with a concert by the double bass player Gastón Joya in the Covarrubias hall of the Teatro Nacional.
Scheduled until January 20, the event includes a great variety of concerts and jazz performances in the cultural centers of Havana and Santiago de Cuba, the latter for the third time, according to Prensa Latina.
Another proposal for the first day is the presentation of the Joven Jazz Band directed by Joaquín Betancourt, who will be accompanied by Argentine pianist Adrián Iaes in the capital’s Mella theatre.
Meanwhile, on the 16th, the concert by maestro Bobby Carcassés will take place alongside the American multi-instrumentalist Roger Glenn, saxophonist Yosvany Terry and trombonist Dick Griffin in the Avellaneda hall of the Teatro Nacional.
Also expected are the shows Benny Moré a century later, led by guitarist Héctor Quintana, as well as concerts by Arturo O’Farrill, Orlando Valle (Maraca) and the Aragón orchestra.
The closing concert in the capital is scheduled for a luxurious evening with pianist and composer Roberto Fonseca and his guests, including the Bride of the Feeling Omara Portuondo.
The concert venues include Mella Theatre, La Zorra y el Cuervo Jazz Club, a cultural centre and the Palacio de la Rumba in Havana, as well as the Iris Jazz Club and Plaza de Marte in Santiago de Cuba.
