South African President Thanks Cuban Contribution Against Apartheid
The South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa, thanked Cuba today for its fundamental contribution in the fight against apartheid and for its collaboration in various fields.
During a meeting with the First Vice President of Cuba, Salvador Valdés Mesa, the leader highlighted in particular the work being done by doctors from the Caribbean island in that southern African nation, reported the Prensa Latina agency in an office dated in Pretoria.
The First Vice President expressed his appreciation for South Africa’s support for Cuba in its fight against the economic, commercial and financial blockade maintained by the United States against the Island for almost 60 years.
At the meeting, it was reported, the coincidence of the two parties in not only maintaining the excellent level of relations but also in increasing them and promoting commercial ties was highlighted.
Ramaphosa and Valdes Mesa exchanged opinions on the situation in Latin America and Africa and the current international context.
The South African Head of State thanked the President of Cuba, Miguel Díaz Canel, for inviting him to visit the Island.
Ramaphosa took the opportunity to send affectionate greetings to the first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba, Raúl Castro, and to President Díaz Canel.
Today, Valdés Mesa, who traveled to South Africa in front of an official delegation invited to Ramaphosa’s swearing-in ceremony as President, also met today with Presidential Minister Nkosozana Dlamini Zuma and leaders of the Communist Party of South Africa.
Likewise, Valdés Mesa held a meeting with the community of Cubans living in South Africa, to whom he explained the work of the government of the Caribbean island in the midst of the sharpening of the aggressive policy of the U.S. government after President Donald Trump’s decision to activate Chapter III of the Helms-Burton Act.
The visitor was welcomed by Cristina Florez, president of the Association of Cubans Residing in South Africa, who thanked him for the opportunity to learn about the reality and actions being carried out in her country in these difficult times.
He also gave a detailed overview of the prioritized work of the Cuban government in the context of the current world situation, in particular with the adoption of measures in food production and the security of the country.
The delegation headed by Valdés Mesa, who also include the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Ana Teresita González and the advisor to the Minister of the Armed Forces Arnaldo Tamayo, will travel tomorrow on an official visit to the kingdom of Eswatini on the invitation of King Mswati III.
The African tour will continue later in Ethiopia.
