Santiago de Cuba, best vene for architecture national event
Santiago de Cuba will host the national event and the presentation of the Life and Work of Architecture 2019 awards, as reported this week by M.Sc.Arq. César Garrido Rodríguez, president of the national executive of the Society of Architecture.
“The awarding of the headquarters was given to our city due to the performance of the provincial Executive. Our province is that which summons architects and engineers to provide a high-performance service, which is demanded by the leadership of the Party and the Government in the territory. In that scenario and in hard competition with Havana, Holguín, Matanzas and Guantánamo provinces were the winners”, commented Garrido Rodríguez.
Although we did not have the privilege of being among the winners, we are very proud that Architect Omar Lopez, Curator of the City, was the president of the jury that -integrated also by other national awards from previous years- decided to deliver the Life and Work awards to Ramon R. Pérez, from Matanzas and Alberto A. del Pino from the province of Guantánamo.
Omar López assured that the commission was a “great responsibility because his work and his contributions to national architecture and urbanism merited recognition on a large scale”.
At a press conference held at the City Conservator’s Office, it was also announced that on the same day the provincial prizes will be awarded to Norma Díaz Ramírez and Eduviges Aput.
Regarding the provincial act, Garrido Rodríguez recalled that after the revolutionary triumph it took place for the first time outside the Cuban capital in Santiago de Cuba 15 years ago, so the anniversary will also be celebrated that will respect the original script conceived for that occasion by the late playwright Ramiro Herrero Beatón under the name of La historia del hombre told by his Casas allusive to a Martí text.
During all these days the architects from Santiago will develop a program of activities including a meeting with students and a visit to El Morro Castle, El Cobre Sanctuary and Santa Ifigenia Heritage Cemetery to pay tribute to Martí, Mariana and Fidel.
