Panamanian Ministry of Security acknowledges that seized drugs do not come from Cuba

The Ministry of Public Security clarifies that the recent seizure of 1,517 drug packages on board a cargo container at the Port of Cristobal, in the province of Colon, which left Cuba, in transit through Panama, bound for Europe, is not attributable to any State.

It is also reported that the competent Panamanian authorities have initiated an investigation to identify those responsible for the contamination of this container, which is presumed to have been contaminated in the national territory.

The contamination of containers in cargo ports represents one of the main modalities used by drug trafficking networks that threaten all countries affected by the production, transit and consumption of drugs at the global level.

Under the current administration the authorities of the Republic of Panama have seized more than 340 tons of drugs, positioning the country as the fourth in global seizures according to the Annual Report 2018 published by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (Unodc).

The Ministry of Public Security and the security agencies of the Republic of Panama reaffirm their commitment to regional security and the protection of the country’s connectivity platform in close collaboration with friendly countries in the fight against transnational organized crime.
