Metro DC Coalition Opposes Sanctions Against Cuba

Washington, June 13 (Latin Press) The Metro DC Coalition in Solidarity with the Cuban Revolution demanded an end to all U.S. sanctions against the island today, including the new travel restrictions imposed last week.

Through a communiqué, the solidarity group regretted the decision of Donald Trump’s administration to prevent people-to-people educational group trips and the prohibition of certain airplanes and vessels, including cruise ships, from going to the Caribbean country.

The statement indicated that these new restrictions add to the activation of Title III of the Helms-Burton Act of 1996, which allows U.S. citizens to sue people around the world who invest in property nationalized in Cuba after the triumph of the Revolution on January 1, 1959.

What are the real objectives of the United States? U.S. presidents of the Democratic and Republican parties, from Dwight Eisenhower to Donald Trump, have unsuccessfully attempted to overthrow the revolutionary socialist government of 1959, the Washington DC coalition said.

The coalition argued that the methods used for that purpose included economic blockade; support for the Bay of Pigs invasion attempt in western Cuba in 1961; the so-called Missile Crisis in 1962; hundreds of plots to assassinate the historic leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro (1926-2016); and other terrorist acts.

Likewise, members of the organization stated that the new restrictions partially close the travel opening registered during the Barack Obama administration (2009-2019), during which a process of normalization of relations began, rejected by Trump.

The Metro DC Coalition agreed with the first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, Raúl Castro, in his affirmation that the US blockade imposed almost 60 years ago is the most important hindrance to the economic development and well-being of the island’s people.

He indicated that Washington’s excuse for imposing the latest sanctions is that Cuba ‘continues to play a destabilizing role in the Western Hemisphere, providing a communist foothold in the region and supporting U.S. adversaries in places like Venezuela and Nicaragua.

Trump’s government continues to threaten to invade Venezuela,’ denounced the group, which rejected the U.S. administration’s justification that the largest of the Antilles has a military presence in the South American country. Health professionals and teachers are in Venezuela.

Hypocritically, the statement added, the United States maintains hundreds of bases around the world to reinforce imperialism, including that of Guantánamo, in Cuba, ‘which Washington refuses to abandon despite violating international law.

What is Cuba’s crime? It serves as an example to the world that it will not surrender to U.S. imperialism, the communiqué noted, calling for an end to the blockade, an end to all restrictions and sanctions against Cuba, and respect for the self-determination of the island and Venezuela.
