Live Coverage: Cubans to the polls in referendum on new Constitution

More than eight million Cubans are summoned this Sunday to exercise their right to vote to define whether or not to ratify the new Constitution of the Republic of Cuba.

In more than 25,340 polling stations throughout the Caribbean nation, there are some 225,000 electoral authorities who were trained and participated in the dynamic test last Sunday.

According to the National Electoral Commission (CEN), the conditions are created for the massive participation of citizens in this event.

7:56 – Cuba’s first vice-president, Salvador Valdés Mesa, said today in Havana that the positive vote of his compatriots for the new Constitution is a worthy tribute to Fidel Castro’s historical legacy.

Shortly after casting his vote, the deputy head of state told national television that everyone’s approval of the new Constitution is also a tribute to all Cuban patriots who, on a day like today 124 years ago, resumed their liberation struggle against Spanish colonialism.

Valdés Mesa affirmed that he gave his support to the new Constitution because it is revolutionary, because it reflects, above all, the opinion of the people, the protagonist in the meetings prior to the creation of the aforementioned Magna Carta.

7:51 The Comptroller General of the Republic, Gladys María Bejerano, exercised her right to vote this Sunday. The official commented through the social network twitter to feel happy to fulfill her citizen duty.
