International Medical Collaboration Highlighted in Cuba

The head of the Ministry of Public Health (Minsap), José Ángel Portal, highlighted today the 55 years of Cuban international medical cooperation in which the specialists of the island have a prominent place.

The missions of health professionals in 89 countries, as an expression of their humanist vocation and the spirit of solidarity of the Cuban Revolution, Portal underlined during the ceremony for the 35th anniversary of the creation of the Family Doctor and Nurse Program.

We cannot fail to mention their starring role in the missions carried out in Venezuela, in Africa, in the Operación Milagro, and in the brigades of the Henrry Reeve Contingent in the face of disasters and serious epidemics,’ said the head of Minsap.

He also referred to the presence of Cuban doctors in the fight against Ebola, as well as in the More Doctors for Brazil program, from where they had to withdraw after the questioning unfounded by the president of the South American giant, Jair Bolsonaro.

In the gala for the anniversary of family medicine in the Caribbean nation, the Cuban minister also highlighted the results achieved by the aforementioned program, which has among its objectives to increase the quality of services and contribute to improving the health status of the population.

According to Portal, for the development of this model of medical care, it was necessary to implement comprehensive actions aimed at the family and the community, whose results demonstrated the validity of the experience extended to the entire nation. He also highlighted the consolidation of the initiative of the historical leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro, which has allowed Cuban medical care to show health indicators comparable to those of developed nations, highlighting the low infant death rate of four per thousand live births, and a life expectancy at birth over 78 years.
