In Cuba we have a new Constitution

We Cubans are enjoying a new constitution since 48 hours ago. Time and the life of the nation go by unstoppably. In Havana, thousands of men and women continue to rebuild their neighborhoods affected by a monstrous tornado.

At the same time, more than three million Cuban signatures were raised around the world in favor of the independence of the Venezuelan nation and to stop the government of the United States which is not slowing down in its arrogance and its longing for new territories and natural resources.

In Contramaestre we continue to love, to fight for a better future, criticizing internal errors and aspiring to perfection. Life in Cuba did not stop last February 24th, but we were closely touched by a breath of fresh air of laws that protect us since January 1st, 1959 and that from now on are even more perfect.

With the new Constitution we have in our hands an instrument to achieve more respect for everything we Cubans do, to support the future of our children and grandchildren, so that our old age is more tranquil. But the time has come to ask ourselves: And now, what’s our turn?

Without stopping, we have to think about this wonderful opportunity that life has given us to live in this country so small but so courageous, that it continues to dare to do first world things, only with a stroke of will and love.

In the middle of this world, diverse and difficult, there is Cuba and we Cubans, with the hard challenge of making a better country with a new law in our hands. This is not about papers to keep in drawers. It is an active instrument to bring greater life to the nation.

Not all the articles of the Cuban Constitution need the renewal of the current laws. More than 50 percent of the rights and duties of the children of this land, of the attributions and functions of the institutions and organisms embodied in the Magna Carta, have laws that protect them, moral laws and revolutionary laws. Nobody has to come and tell us Cubans how we should defend our most basic individual rights. What we Cubans do have is the duty to participate and contribute with the opinion we are asked, at the time of perfecting the legislations that will give us more democracy.

It is also the duty of Cubans to be attentive to the fact that no one sullies what has been approved, so that there is no going back on any article, so that those who voted Yes or simply No and participated in the referendum are respected regarding that constitutional right to participate in the consolidation of their country.

We must be aware that we will never be a better nation if we Cubans divide because we decide one day, like February 24th, to make an option for this or that.

We Cubans must exercise that universal right that, above all, we are inside this unredeemed country, where no one will have bubbles to lock up despite their beliefs, where we assumed many years ago that the bullets of the enemies have no name and that at the time of battle the unanimous cry is: Cuba is not to be touched! because it is up to Cubans alone to fix our internal affairs.

No divisions among Cubans, which made us lose several revolutionary battles in the wars for independence in past centuries. Democracy means government of the people and above all, a condition for the minority to subordinate itself to the majority, which is the humblest population, at least in the case of Cuba. Could there be a more beautiful and expeditious reality in the world today to continue building a better country?

We already have a new Constitution in Cuba. Now it is up to us to take it in our hands and be better Cubans, and to build a better society.
