European Union and ECLAC form block against Helms-Burton

In Havana today, statements by high officials of the European Union and the Economic Commission for Latin America, ECLAC, ratified the rejection of these entities to the intensification of the US blockade and especially to Helms-Burton.
The European Union strongly condemns the unilateral extraterritorial measures related to Cuba, which are contrary to international law, said the Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development of the Community bloc, the Croatian Neven Mimica.

The European official reiterated the concern of the 28 for the negative impact on the economy and living conditions of Cubans of the tightening of the blockade and recent travel restrictions.

The director of ECLAC’s subregional headquarters in Mexico, Hugo Beteta, said that Hemls-Burton does not only affect Cuba, but many others.
This event and others that have taken place this week are new signs of the failure of U.S. policy against Cuba, said the Cuban Minister of Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment, Rodrigo Malmierca, at the opening of a Business Forum attended by more than a hundred businessmen, lawyers and academics.

The minister assured that the government offers all the legal guarantees contemplated to protect foreign companies doing business with our country.

Malmierca stressed that the forum seeks to generate a space for debate on these issues, exchange information and jointly assess new ways to promote economic relations in Cuba.

W. Bush’s former Secretary of Commerce and current president of the U.S.-Cuba Business Council, Carlos Gutierrez, told Radio Reloj that wisdom is needed in the White House today.
