Diaz-Canel rejects Trump’s decision on FCB-MLB Agreement
Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, President of Cuba, said Tuesday that many in Cuba and the United States reject the cancellation by U.S. President Donald Trump of an agreement between the Cuban Baseball Federation and the Major Leagues (MLB).
Diaz-Canel Bermudez reacted on his Twitter account to Trump’s decision on Monday to end the pact reached last December after three years of negotiations, a step celebrated on both sides of the Florida Strait because it should stop the trafficking of people who face Cuban baseball players in their aspirations to play in the Big Tent.
The Cuban President refers to the position set in Washington by the Engage Cuba coalition, an initiative that favors trade and good bilateral relations, which described the cancellation as a cynical, cruel and free act, published today JIT in its digital edition.
Trump argued that the Cuban Baseball Federation is part of the government of the Largest of the Antilles, and that therefore trade in baseball is illegal under U.S. law, an argument previously defended by Cuban-born Senator Marco Rubio, known for his aggressiveness against Havana.
The White House decision came less than 15 days after the Island released a list of more than 30 baseball players eligible to sign contracts with MLB teams, beginning with the agreement reached, which many considered historical.
