Diaz-Canel Highlights Need To Defend Municipal Autonomy From Planning

We have to defend the autonomy of municipalities from the planning stage,” said Miguel Díaz-Canel, President of Cuba, during his intervention in the annual report of the Ministry of Economy and Planning (MEP).

The president stressed that this is precisely one of the challenges of the new Magna Carta, approved by the National Assembly and ratified by 86.85 percent of the votes cast by electors.

This initiative seeks that the territories are able to develop with their own forces and with the interrelations they make, said Diaz-Canel, while ensuring that government inspections to the provinces have made it possible to understand that there are resources of the province and municipality that must be included in the Economy Planning.

The more we develop the municipalities here, the more we will be able to focus on the strategies, said the President of Cuba. Diaz-Canel also said that from the ratification of the new Law of Laws an intense legislative exercise will be carried out in which the MEP will have to play an important role.

The president also discussed the importance of increasing exports to boost the country’s development, and he said that it is necessary that when entities request financing for an investment, they are able to return that fund from their own results.

He insisted on the importance of defending productive chains with foreign investment, tourism -the driving force of the economy- and the non-state sector.

He also commented that it is vital to strengthen the state enterprise, to implement transparent and participatory government management, and to use more scientific innovation for development.
