Diaz-Canel Denounces U.S. Maneuver to Affect Relations with Cuba

The United States denies visas and obstructs the work of diplomatic missions with the purpose of justifying and continuing the setback of bilateral relations with Cuba, stated Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, President of the Councils of State and Ministers of Cuba, today.

In his profile in the social network Twitter, the President published that both the American and Cuban people reject this perverse behavior of the U.S. government.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cuba (Minrex) issued Wednesday a statement noting that in recent months, the State Department of the northern country creates a new pretext to affect bilateral diplomatic relations.

According to the communiqué, the maneuver consists of claiming that the largest of the Antilles hinders the granting of visas to the officials appointed to the U.S. Embassy in Cuba, which allegedly hinders the performance of that Diplomatic Mission.

In doing so, the State Department deliberately masks the fact that it was the U.S. government that unilaterally decided to reduce the personnel of its Embassy in Havana in September 2017, including especially the personnel in charge of consular services, with the consequent affectation to Cuban and U.S. citizens who depend on those services.

The note also refers to the fact that since that date the functioning of both Missions has been affected by these unilateral decisions. Similarly, the granting of the visas required for the personnel of the respective Embassies has been subjected to approvals and capricious delays by the Department of State.

The Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs also states that accusing the Island of generating an unsustainable situation for the operation of the United States Embassy constitutes a flagrant distortion of the truth.

Therefore, the Cuban government is not responsible for the instability and irregularity unilaterally created by the government of the United States in the functioning of the Diplomatic Missions of both countries in their respective capitals, underlines the text.

The Minrex maintains the will to facilitate the requirements of each side for the respective functioning of the Embassies on the basis of reciprocity.
