Diaz-Canel congratulates Leo Brouwer on his 80th birthday

Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, president of Cuba, today congratulated the outstanding Cuban guitarist, composer and orchestra conductor Leo Brouwer on his 80th birthday.

Juan Leovigildo Brouwer Mesquida, better known as Leo Brouwer, was born in Havana on March 1, 1939, and he has a valuable artistic career in which he excels as a composer, guitarist and orchestra conductor.

His work includes a large number of pieces for guitar, several concerts and more than 40 musical works for cinema. Leo Brouwer has an active participation in the organization of the International Guitar Competition and Festival of Havana.

Brower is also founder of the Grupo de Experimentación Sonora of the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry. In 2009 he was awarded the National Film Prize for his fruitful link with the cinematography of the Island, which he enriched with memorable scores, and in 2010 he was awarded the Tomás Luis de Victoria Prize, among other recognitions.
