Cuba’s new draft constitution denies campaigns
The Secretary of the Council of State of Cuba, Homero Acosta, affirmed Friday at the Cuban Parliament that the project of a new Constitution enriched by popular criteria defeats campaigns aimed at raising doubts or denying its democratic character.
The text denies the opinion matrices saying that there would be no changes, that everything was already decided beforehand, warned Acosta at the Havana Convention Center, during the presentation of the document that represents a total reform of the Constitution in force since 1976.
According to the MP and member of the commission responsible for drafting the new Law, after the consultation from August 13 to November 15, 134 of the 224 articles of the draft approved in July by the Parliament were modified.
We are talking about 60 percent with changes. Who can deny the willingness to listen to the people?, he stressed.
Acosta pointed out that as a result of the criteria of the Cubans, collected in more than 133,000 meetings, with the participation of almost nine million people, only 87 articles did not underwent transformations, while three were removed.
The detailed text presentation will be followed – as it seems this Saturday – by Parliament’s decision of whether to endorse it or not.
If Cuban deputies approve the new draft Constitution as expected, the Council of State will call for a referendum, so that the citizens can express themselves by direct and secret vote whether they endorse the law of laws or not.
