Cuban women who set no limits to time or wakefulness

Five members of the Federation of Cuban Women (FMC) – María Gisela Álvarez Fernández, Bárbara Durades Miclín, María Elvira Dávila Viamonte, María Yolanda Ferrer Gómez and Rosa Esther Tabera de la Guardia – were awarded with Mariana Grajales Order on Friday, while 20 others were recognized with Ana Betancourt Order, for their capacity to create and fight, for their extensive political, labor, social background and fidelity to revolutionary ideals. The ceremony was presided over by José Ramón Machado Ventura, Second Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC).

A few days after the majority of the people endorsed the new Constitution of the Republic, the Federation of Cuban Women, immersed in the development of its 10th Congress, recognizes the work of those who dedicated and dedicating their lives to the organization with devotion and effort, said Arelys Santana, second secretary of the FMC, during the ceremony.

“The most important wealth of this island is its people, those women and men who day by day devote themselves with passion to society, with total detachment,” she acknowledged.

Today we are accompanied by a representation of these women, Santana said, “who put no limits to time or wakefulness and who are capable of turning every challenge into a victory.
The ceremony was also attended by Teresa Amarelle Boué, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba and secretary general of the Cuban Women’s Federation; members of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the PCC Mercedes López Acea and Olga Lidia Tapia, and the Brigade General Delsa Esther Puebla Viltre (Teté), among others.
The 10th Congress of the organization will take place in Havana from March 6 to 8, with some 360 delegates and 40 guests. During these days, participants will reflect on the role of the FMC as a mobilizer of women in terms of updating the economic and social model, the continuation of the Federation and its internal life.

THE PROTAGONISM OF CUBAN WOMEN IN FIGURES
Cuba has more than 4,300,000 FMC members, surpassing 90% of women over the age of 14.
Women represent 53.22 per cent of the seats held in the Cuban Parliament, the highest legislative body in the country, and 48.4 per cent of the members of the Cuban Government.
They account for 60.5 per cent of higher education graduates and 67.2 per cent of technicians and professionals nationwide; 49 per cent of the civil state workforce; 48.6 per cent of leaders; 81.9 per cent of teachers, professors and scientists; 80 per cent of prosecutors, presidents of provincial courts, professional judges and the workforce in the health and education sectors.
