Cuban Minister of Education evaluates school year preparation
Ena Elsa Velázquez Cobiella, Cuban Minister of Education, today chaired a working meeting on the preparations for the new school year in the province of Artemisa where she called for more students to be integrated into educational courses.
According to the information offered in the exchange, only 46 university graduates will be incorporated into the classrooms during the next academic period, hence the call of the incumbent, who also reflected on the need to open university courses in chemistry and mathematics to cover the needs of the province in the pre-universities.
Velázquez Cobiella said that the country’s situation will not block the delivery of fundamental resources for different teachings, although not in the same amount as before, so she called for better preparation of the teachers, more creativeness, more effective use of laboratories and better use of auxiliary classrooms.
He added that during the school year attention should be paid to the epidemiological situation in each school and to the giant African snail, as well as to controlling the use of resources and taking care of furniture.
Caridad Cruz Ávila, provincial director of education, said that the province’s 385 centers will begin the school year, whose enrollment increased from 79,137 students to 80,215, however there is an estimated deficit of 1,347 teachers, a situation that will be alleviated with teachers hired by the hour, and there will be an increase in the teaching workload and in the number of students per teacher.
Gladis Martínez Verdecia, first secretary of the Provincial Committee of the communist Party of Cuba in the province, said that the solution to the lack of teachers is not only the wage increase, but also an integrated work between the different teachings with emphasis on teacher training.
The also member of the Central Committee added that she will continue the systematic analysis of maintenance, since one of the main concerns of teachers, parents and students is that school conditions are not good.
In the meeting where authorities of the province and directors of the Ministry of Education participated, the situation of the material base of study and of life, the sale of the school uniform and the fulfillment of the plan of maintenance and investments foreseen to date were updated.
