Cuban medication proves highly effective

Dr. Andrés Morilla, head of the National Neonatology Group, stated that Surfacen has decreased infant mortality in Cuba, mainly in children under five with Acute Respiratory Distress.

This natural surfactant, developed by scientists at the National Center for Animal Health, has proven its effectiveness in treating distress and its research won the 2017 Annual Health Grand Prize.

Before using Cuban Surfacen, infant mortality from hyaline membrane disease was around 10 per 1,000 live births and it is now 0.2, said the director.

Morilla explained that since 1990 the drug has been used, which also has a high economic impact, considering that exogenous surfactants are produced in developed nations with high market prices.
