Cuban brigade that provided medical aid in Mozambique arrives in Cuba
The 40 members of the brigade of the Henry Reeve Contingent, specialized in situations of disasters and serious epidemics, that provided medical aid to the people of Mozambique, after the passing of the powerful cyclone Idai, last March, arrived in Havana in the early hours on Sunday.
As it was expressed in the welcome ceremony, the doctors are the followers of the tradition of selflessness and solidarity that characterizes Cuba and the medical collaboration that the Island offers since these programs began in 1963 with the sending of the first brigade to Algeria.
José Ángel Portal Miranda, Minister of Public Health (Minsap), highlighted the work carried out under difficult conditions, as well as the satisfaction of seeing them return with their duty accomplished.
The gratitude not only comes from that sister nation, but also from Cuba, he said, because in addition to providing a very positive result in terms of medical care, they also leave a legacy of the Revolution and of the Cuban people in Mozambique.
Marcia Cobas Ruiz, vice-title of the Minsap, highlighted the dignity, sensitivity, professionalism and dedication of the medical personnel, and pointed out that the conformation of this brigade, or its preparation and performance, contributed experiences for others of its type that also serve abroad and for the next ones to be constituted.
The Cuban medical collaboration on this occasion was carried out by deploying a field hospital with a clinical, surgical and epidemiological profile, which offered services in internal medicine, pediatrics, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedics, traumatology and clinical laboratory, among others.
During its stay in Mozambique, the brigade carried out 22,259 consultations and 331 surgical procedures. Malaria control actions were also carried out, reaching more than 17,000 homes visited and more than 50,000 people assisted.
Cuba does not know hatred, but infinite love and dedication for the most needy, said Dr. Rolando Piloto, Head of the brigade, on behalf of the new arrivals.
We are specialists in sharing what we have, and not giving what we have left over,” said the doctor.
