Cuba pardons 2,604 convicted

The Government of Cuba pardoned 2,604 people deprived of liberty in line with the postulates of the new Constitution of the Republic which favor the social reinsertion of those sanctioned, as published today.

According to an official note, this pardon took into account the requests of relatives and it was carried out in compliance with the policy established by the government of the Caribbean nation several years ago.

The determination in each case was conditioned To agree that decision was evaluated the good behavior during the sentence, the time passed of the sanction, as well as the characteristics and results of the charges, stresses the text.

Similarly, the age and chronic illnesses suffered by some inmates were analyzed, and particularly women, young people and elderly people were included.

According to the communiqué, in all cases those selected have served at least one third of the penalty imposed by the courts.

The brief clarifies that this measure did not include those punished for crimes of murder, rape, paedophilia with violence, homicide, child corruption, theft and illegal slaughter of large livestock, as well as those with drug-related conduct and fuel theft.

Neither were included aggravated figures of robbery with violence or intimidation of persons, acts of corruption and recidivist and multi-recidivist inmates, and those who had previously been pardoned and subsequently re-entered prison for the commission of a new criminal act, according to the note.
