Cuba in the fifth country seat in the judo Grand Prix
The Cuban judocas had a successful weekend at the Grand Prix concluded in the city of Tbilisi, capital of Georgia, when Ivan Silva and Kaliema Antomarchi won gold and silver prizes, respectively.
The commendable performances of these two sports women were added to those of Magdiel Estrada (73) and Maylín del Toro (63), who on Saturday had won second and third places, in that order. A day earlier, Oniel Solis (60) and Anailys Dorvigni (57) left without any medals.
In her rounds through the event, Silva advanced to the final after achieving four victories per ippon, and in her fifth match she defeated the local Giorgi Papunashvili (wazari in golden rule), a result that sent Cuba to the fifth seat by country, with one gold, two silver awards and a bronze, behind powers such as France (3-1-3), Georgia (2-2-6), Holland (2-2-6) and the Netherlands (2-1-3) and Kosovo (2-0-0). More than 300 judocas from 52 nations took part in the strong derby.
As for Kaliema Antomarchi, she only gave up in the gold contest against Loriana Kuka (Kosovo), having left in the sand competitors from Israel, Kazakhstan and France.
