Cuba Celebrates of Latin American Medicine Day with Sorrow and Dignity

When it comes to medicine and medical services, we must count on Cuba, which today has the luxury of celebrating Latin American Medicine Day with free medical care and everyone’s rights without distinction, and with a presence of health personnel in more than 67 nations.

Today, Cuba has an infant mortality rate of 4.0 per 1,000 live births, one of the achievements of 2018. In addition to the mother-child program, it has a network of family clinics per neighborhoods, a system of hospitals, polytechnics, specialized centers, laboratories and research centers, all in function of the people’ health.

The medical collaboration puts Cuban medicine at the top of the list to celebrate this special day with more than 50 thousand health collaborators currently providing services in 67 countries, of which 32 are working through the Integral Health Program.

However, Cuba today celebrates Latin American Medicine Day in the midst of deep regret considering the position of Brazilian President-elect Jair Bolsonaro, who expressed his intention to put an end to medical collaboration in that country once he assumed the presidency in January.

” More Doctors”, name of Cuban medical mission in Brazil, had taken 20 000 Cuban cooperation workers have assisted 113 359 000 patients in more than 3 600 municipalities. They managed to provide health coverage to a universe of up to 60 million Brazilians at the moment when they accounted for 80 per cent of all the doctors who were taking part in the program. More than 700 municipalities were able to count on a doctor for the first time ever.

The Cuban government arranged for the immediate return of personnel who were in Brazil. With a high sense of dignity and a large number of doctors have returned with the firm willingness to provide their services in any other country that needs them, to continue saving lives, showing their outstanding professionalism and ethics that have characterized Cuban doctors and nurses.

Cuba will continue to honor the Latin American Medicine Day with “More Doctors” for other countries while the president of the South American Giant stands for epidemics and death for millions of Brazilians, who saw hope and life in the Cuban doctors.
