Cuba better prepared to face natural disasters
All of Cuba is better prepared to face natural disasters, after having developed Sunday the Meteoro 2019 exercise, since the hurricane season is to start in June.
Cuban television summarized what happened throughout the country during the Meteoro’s activities which include not only Sunday but also Saturday’s actions as planned.
The activities carried out in Santiago de Cuba, Granma, Holguin, Ciego de Ávila, La Habana, Mayabeque, and Pinar del Rio stood out in this summary. These provinces were noted for the quality of the population’s demonstrated preparation to face the eventualities of natural disasters.
The Meteoro at the national level included sewer cleaning, rubble collection, simulation of natural disasters and their subsequent actions, of course, with prior training of the cadres and leaders in charge of the exercise.
The municipality of Contramaestre, in the province of Santiago de Cuba, carried out the activities of Meteoro 2019, in which the capacity of the municipality’s command and direction organs, teams and brigades to mitigate the possible effects of high-intensity climatological events and disasters of chemical or health origin were successfully tested.
In particular, the Public Health services were distinguished, which located a field hospital in areas adjacent to the General Hospital Orlando Pantoja Tamayo and trained in the provision of first aid to probable victims and pregnant women at term.
Particularly in Contramaestre, the activities designed with such purposes, have served to reinforce the constructive state of housings, the accomplishment of tasks of sanitization of sewers and gullies that collect great amounts of water in crossroads of highways and roads, and tree pruning.
On Saturday 18, the training of the management and command bodies at all levels was intensified and the experiences lived during the most recent events that have affected the national territory in recent years were wisely studied.
To end the day of the 2019 Meteoro Exercise, Contramaestre authorities and the town of Remanganaguas concentrated on the cemetery and obelisk of the same name, erected in memory of National Hero José Martí, to commemorate the 124th anniversary of his fall in combat.
