Chamber music fosters cultural bonds between Cuba and the U.S.

A dozen musicians from the Minnesota Orchestra, USA, share the stage in Havana with professors from Cuba’s Instituto Superior de Arte (“Higher Institute of Art”), in a unique concert as part of the “Together in Harmony” tour.

The recital is included in the program of presentations of the Cuban American Youth Orchestra (CAYO), a cultural exchange initiative with more than 70 musicians from both nations.

Based in the Paula church in the Cuban capital, the selection for this unique concert honors international chamber music classics such as Francis Poulenc’s Trio for Brass, Serenade, Hungarian Erno Dohnányi and British Malcom Arnold’s Divertimento.

Michael Gast, Adam Kuenzel, Manuel Laureano, Fernando Meza, Susie Park, Pinarry Shin, John Snow, Kari Sundstrom, David Williamson, Gareth Zehngut and Timothy Zavadil are on the list of American musicians, while Cuba presents Alfredo Muñoz, Osmani Hernández and Ricardo Travieso.

According to the creator of CAYO, Rena Kraut, the objective of this non-profit initiative is to provide educational and performance opportunities to musicians from both countries through workshops, artistic delegations and cultural exchanges, which benefit both students and teachers.

Both this concert and the two planned for the Youth Orchestra in the province of Matanzas and Havana, take place within the celebration of the Cubadisco festival and the activities of tribute to the 500th anniversary of Havana.
