ALBA-TCP: Threats to Peace in Latin America Denounced

At the opening of the forum, the Cuban Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodriguez, called for unity and mobilization in the face of the growing interventionism of the United States under the Monroe doctrine and the threats of military aggression against Venezuela.

“The bloc favors initiatives that promote respectful dialogue based on respect and non-interference in the South American country,” he said.

ALBA-TCP: Threats to Peace in Latin America Denounced

The 18th Political Council of the Bolivarian Alliance of the Peoples of Our America-Treaty of Trade of the Peoples began this May 21 in Havana with Cuba’s denunciation of the threats to peace and security in the region.

At the opening of the forum, the Cuban Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodriguez, called for unity and mobilization in the face of the growing interventionism of the United States under the Monroe doctrine and the threats of military aggression against Venezuela.

The head of Cuban diplomacy stressed that ALBA-TCP reinforces solidarity with the Venezuelan people, its legitimately constituted government and President Nicolás Maduro.

“The bloc favors initiatives that promote respectful dialogue based on respect and no meddling in the South American country,” he said.

He indicated that the dialogue initiatives promoted by Mexico, Caricom and Uruguay (known as the Montevideo mechanism) “will have the support of our peoples, adhering to the principles of the UN Charter and international law.

Rodríguez described the Venezuelan government’s resistance to threats, aggressions and sanctions as admirable. The Cuban foreign minister also rejected the singularization measures applied to Caribbean countries that are accused of being ‘non-cooperative tax havens’.

He also denounced the intensification of the blockade applied by the US against Cuba, following the activation of Chapter III of the Helms-Burton law, which aims to suffocate the island economically and financially.

“Cuba will again present the draft resolution that the UN General Assembly has approved for 26 years and that pronounces itself for the end of the siege of the largest island in the Antilles,” said the head of the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He concluded that ALBA is and will be a nucleus of resistance against the imperialist and neoliberal wave unleashed in the region.

The Political Council of ALBA-TCP is formed by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of each member country, and its objective is to advise the Presidential Council of that integrationist platform on strategic issues and to present proposals for international political issues for debate in that instance.
