Agriculture, a vital sector for the Cuban economy
When Cuba is experiencing great economic tensions, and food prices on the international market continue to rise, the development of agriculture has become a first priority.
It is important to point out that even though the sector is far from guaranteeing the food sovereignty that Cuba needs, last year this sector showed progress in its economic indicators, in spite of the effects of hydrometeorological events, together with the lack of basic inputs such as fodder, pesticides, fertilizers and others. Nevertheless, the plan was over-achieved by more than 120 million pesos, showing a growth of 17 % with respect to 2017.
For Increasing Exports
Despite the incidence of economic tensions and climate effects, the Ministry of Agriculture met its contributions to the State Budget by 96 per cent, 5 per cent more than in 2017.
Exports also grew by more than 29 million dollars, although sales of products such as charcoal, coffee, honey, fruits and vegetables were affected during the period due to transportation, production and climate problems.
Following the upward trend for the current year, the sector expects all Business Groups, except Labiofam, to increase their exports, which will contribute to achieving greater contributions to our economy, which today urgently needs income.
