Son a Maffo, inspired by Maria’s window
Oscar Mora Fornaris, popularly known in the music world as Cachao, has a song that is already antological for all the people of Contramaestre, no matter where they live or how they think; especially for musicians like Ramón David and Frank Martínez, who in their travels through France in recent months have not stopped interpreting Cachao’s song.
Today we reveal the place that motivated the “Son a Maffo”. According to Cachao, in that town they performed very liked serenades and in them Raúl Sanjurjo, one of his best friends, had a very special role. On one of those occasions, Sanjurjo asked for a song to sing to his wife Maria in the window of the house. According to Cachao, that’s where the song came from and that morning they went there to give her the gift.
La Ventana de María in Maffo is as famous as that of Luz Vásquez in Bayamo. That’s where the most important son in all of Contramaestre’s history was born, that which young talents from our most authentic trova take around the world as ambassadors of Cuban music. That is why Ramón David proudly says of his Maestro Cachao:
“I feel safe when I take my songs to him, besides even though he is more than ninety years old, his language is still useful and lasting. The man knows what song to sing in his moment and how to interact. You enjoy his work a lot. Every time I listen to it, I am nourished by its melodies and continue to learn from its richness.”
“Cachao is an authentic troubadour, he still performs at the radio station of our town to give us the musical spirit he carries, it is a pleasure to see that he still has followers on the radio and in life. With Cachao you find the roots of Cuban music. Watch video here with “Son a Maffo“.
