Contramaestre held Workshop on Theater
On August 15 and 16, a meeting of artists and theater scholars took place in Contramaestre, whose activities included La Bota Rota (“the Worn-out Boot”) Theater Workshop, held at the Gerardo Morín Frías Culture Hall in the Maffo-Moscow District. The central theme of the event was theatrical self-recognition.
At the end we spoke with Juan Sosa, theater professor and president of the Asosciación Hermanos Saíz (AHS) of the province of Santiago de Cuba, entity responsible for what happens in the field of theater these days in Contramaestre.
“This is an basic workshop, of self-recognition, of how you are on the outside, what you can represent, because one does not do anything other than appropriate the material to represent a character. It’s a lie because you never stop being you, when you feel fear, it’s your fear that you put it in the version of a character that someone wrote for you. This is more or less the idea. A workshop for young people and adults that serves as an injection to the municipality that has maintained the theater La Bota rota, now traditional. And we supported ourselves in this cultural event to rescue the theater in Contramaestre, by contributing to bring the theater out of the crisis in which it finds itself right now throughout the country.”
Workshop participants expressed their feelings about this cultural event:
“We see it as a good space for exchange because it allows the cultural brigade José Martí, the AHS, the Culture Halls to convene an event and to have important results for theater in Contramaestre. It also serves to nourish and learn more about this interesting topic. It provides work tools.”
In the afternoon, this Friday, a panel session was held on the motivation for theatrical creation. In addition, audiovisual material was projected that dealt with such important topics as the objectives of the Hermanos Saíz Association and the performing arts section as a way of approaching reality from the tables. In the evening the experimental theater group from Santiago de Cuba La Caja Negra (“The Black Box”) was presented, with the staging of the play Leviatan by its director, Juan Sosa. The audience with their applause expressed their enjoyment for the contents presented and the quality of the presentation.
