Contramaestre

The municipality of Contramaestre is located in the central-western part of the province of Santiago de Cuba. It has an area of 611.43 km² and is the sixth largest in the province. It is bordered to the north by the municipalities of Jiguaní and Urbano Noris, in the provinces of Granma and Holguín, to the east by the municipality of Palma Soriano, to the south by the municipality of Tercer Frente and to the west by the municipality of Jiguaní.

Sugar cane cultivation, Cattle, sheep, pig and horse breeding, Poultry breeding. Also an industrial plant of honey and wax, combined Industrial Citrus, Central Sugar America Libre for the production of sugar cane, fish hatcheries and a fishing company, all for local consumption and export. For local consumption only, Contramaestre has small factories for the production of tobacco, ice-cream, mayonnaise, cheese, boots.

The population of the municipality of Contramaestre is 106 002 inhabitants (2013). It is the third municipality in Santiago to exceed one hundred thousand inhabitants. Its population density is 155.4 inhabitants per km², occupying the second place in the province. The urban population is 59.4%, below the provincial population. The population of the municipality is concentrated in the transverse axis formed by the Carretera Central and the railway line from San Luis to Bayamo, its main populations being Contramaestre and Baire, and Los Negros.

The radio in Contramaestre had its origin in 1988 with the broadcasting of our station, which was officially founded on February 24, 1990. Since then, it has contributed to raise the culture, education, information and recreation of its listeners. Since May 17, 2006 the press organ has a web site www.radiogritodebaire.cu at the service of the information for the internauts of the world and Cuba, as well as its English version issued on November 1, 2018. www.radiogritodebaire.icrt.cu/English
